Nature Journaling with Kids
A nature journal is the single most powerful tool in nature-led learning β and it costs about five dollars. It's a blank book where your child records what they observe outside in drawings, words and numbers. Over a year it quietly becomes a science notebook, a writing portfolio, an art folio and a memory keeper, all at once.
If you do only one thing from this whole website, make it this. A nature journal needs no internet, no screen and no special skill, and it works just as well on a balcony in Brunswick as it does on a property in the bush.
Why it's the spine of everything
- It teaches real observation. Looking closely is a skill, and drawing forces it far better than a photo does. To draw a gum leaf a child has to notice the oil glands, the curve, the way it hangs β things they'd walk straight past with a camera.
- It integrates subjects without you trying. A single page can hold a sketch (art), a label (literacy), a measurement (maths), a question (science) and the date and weather (recording). You're not "doing five subjects" β you're doing one rich thing.
- It builds patience and attention. Ten quiet minutes of noticing is a genuine antidote to the fast, fragmented pace of screens.
- It's perfect evidence of learning for registration: dated, in the child's own hand, showing growth over time. More on that below.
What you actually need
One unlined book per child (unlined frees little hands from "doing it wrong"), a pencil, and a small watercolour or coloured-pencil set. That is genuinely all.
If you want to add a little later: a fine black pen for outlining, a glue stick (for tucking in found leaves and tickets), a small ruler, and a cheap hand lens so they can draw what they see up close. Skip anything fancy β expensive supplies raise the stakes and lower the willingness to make a mess.
The three magic prompts
Teach kids to fill a page with these three headers. They work at any age and break the "blank page" freeze instantly:
- I notice⦠(what do you see, hear, smell, feel?)
- I wonder⦠(what questions does it raise?)
- It reminds me of⦠(connections to other things you know)
This trio comes from the naturalist tradition for good reason: notice builds observation, wonder builds science, and reminds me of builds the connections that make learning stick.
What can go on a page (it's not just drawings)
- A labelled sketch of one thing β a feather, a seed pod, a beetle.
- A map of the backyard, the walk, or "where I found it."
- A list β every bird heard in ten minutes, every colour in one tree.
- A weather box β temperature, cloud, wind, in the corner of each entry.
- A leaf or bark rubbing, or a real pressed flower glued in.
- A "sit spot" entry β same place, revisited across the seasons.
- A question collection β a running page of "things I want to find out."
- A before/after β the same plant in autumn and in spring.
A guide by age
- Ages 3β6 (Little Hands): keep it sensory and short. They dictate the words while you scribe; they draw big and bold. One object, one colour-match, one sticker-sized leaf. Five minutes is a triumph.
- Ages 7β9: introduce the three prompts, simple labels, and a date-and-place habit. Encourage one measurement per entry (how long? how many?).
- Ages 10β13 (Bigger Hands): push for accuracy and detail β scientific labelling, scale, comparisons across time, and proper research to answer their own "I wonder" questions. This is where a journal becomes real field science.
Prompts for when they're stuck
Keep this list in the back of the journal:
- Draw the smallest living thing you can find.
- Find something rough and something smooth; describe both.
- Sit still for two minutes β list every sound.
- Draw the same tree you drew last month. What changed?
- Follow an ant for five minutes and map where it goes.
- Catch a falling leaf, or the first of something this season.
- Draw the sky right now, exactly.
- What can you find that's older than you? Younger than you?
Drawing tips for the "I can't draw" parent
You don't need to be good β you need to be willing, because your wobbly sketch gives your child permission to try. Three tips that help everyone:
- Look more than you draw. Spend more time on the object than on the page.
- Start with big shapes, then add detail β like blocking in a shadow before the leaf veins.
- It's a record, not a masterpiece. A rough drawing with a true observation beats a pretty one copied from a book.
Make it a habit, not a chore
- Keep it short. Ten minutes and one observation beats an hour of resistance.
- Always date the page and add the place and weather β that's how patterns emerge across the seasons.
- Draw alongside them, in your own journal.
- Never grade it. It's a thinking tool, not a test.
- Revisit a "sit spot" β the same bench, tree or balcony corner, again and again. Familiarity is what turns looking into seeing.
Using the journal as a learning record
For homeschool registration, a nature journal is a ready-made portfolio. To make it count:
- Date every entry and note the location β instant evidence of consistent, ongoing learning.
- Let it show breadth β a single week's pages can demonstrate science, writing, maths and art.
- Add the occasional "research" entry where an older child answers one of their own questions and notes where they found out.
- Photograph standout pages so you have a backup and an easy way to share with your regulator.
Common pitfalls (and the fix)
- Aiming for beautiful. β Aim for true. Celebrate noticing, not neatness.
- Too many rules. β One book, three prompts, go.
- Only on "good days." β Rain, wind and grey skies are great journal days.
- Stopping when interest dips. β Change the location or shorten the time, not the habit.
